Setting up a real board.

Anyone have any thoughts to this?  This place is free, and what we can do with it is pretty much done.  Any options, you have... if a real (= pay) board is set up we would have more features and options and such.


Personally, I totally dig this idea.  However, though I might have loads of time I could put into it, I have no $$.


So, what do you think?

that is sort of whats going on in the suggestion board. phpbb software is free and i have experience administrating on it. (yeah its that easy). it has comparable flexibility with vforums. i also have a hookup through one of my friends that hosts our local car board. his package allows him 3 phpbb forums and he only has one. so i might just share that package with him for pretty cheap. also i have come up with the name www.deviantcircle.com since we basically are a circle of deviant friends. anyone that wants to check out the forum software can look at www.phpbb.com.

I didn't see this here.  Listen, between pattie and I we're pretty much set on the who, what, where, when, why's, and how's.  I put a big thing up in Suggestions if you want to go look.  But, basically we want this to be a group thing, all of us together as one big happy online family.  As far as the funding goes, I'm willing to take a hit for the team to the best of my abality.  If anyone can pitch in, that'd be great, too.  But, with the group of us working as a whole I think this would be really great.  If you guys give us the go to make a new "real" site, than all I need right now is a definate name and somebody good with graphics to work soemthing up.  Other than that, I think we're set for right now.  Basically my comp teacher (a really great guy, you can see his work at pumpkinheadweb.com ) said he can make a site basically just like his within a short amount of time.  I just don't want to fork over the money to get the domain name, server, portal, etc unless we are all really serious about this.  I'm poor, but I really want to make this happen.  So, let me know...

I could help with this shizzle if you need an extra pair of hands.  I've set up many a bulletin board (VBulletin and UBB) here at work, and I'm a designer by trade, so yeah, lemme know.

have you played with phpbb any? i'd like to keep the costs down as much as possible is why i'm staying away from vbulletin. even putting up the up front costs leaves the board liable to go under down the road. if we keep costs to the minimum without sacrificing usability then it will be a win win situation. i personally i'm not comfortable with one person dumping 400 into this upfront and i know pay support for the forum down the road will be about impossible to uphold.

I understand that, and I appicate you being worried about me putting money into the forum.  And I did look into the link you gave me and it does look nice.  Listen, you and anti are the computer nerds around here and truth be told I don't know a whole hell of a lot about it.  I'm basically going on what Rich (my teacher) told me.  I know he's not dicking me around, he's a really great guy.  But, maybe there are other options to cut down the cost a bit.  You knew of several this morning, so do some more research on that and get back to me.  I'd like to at least register or domain name by early next week, though, so while you're doing that I'll start a poll for our new name.
